How do you set warning and down conditions for the SQLspXML custom sensor? I can set a notification based on one of the channel values but would really like to set warn and down conditions based on a channels value such as what is possible with a sql sensor that returns just a single value.

have you tried the "Error/Warning-Limits" in the sensor's Channel-Settings?
