I was wondering if remote sensors use compression for communication with the core server(s).

Short answer probes talk to the host via SSL, as this is encrypted, its technically compressed in the process.

But considering sensor data is often very small bits of information, then compressing of small samples if not going to do much.

eg, create a txt file that says "0:OK" and zip it up - its compressed, but not any smaller.

As far as I'm concerned, the data is not compressed. But the traffic really is negligible.
Small example: 10,000 SNMP Traffic Sensors in a 60s interval cause a traffic of 400kBit/s :)
