I try to install a new PRTG version on my Windows Server 2003 system using the auto-update. Unfortunately, the update cannot be installed. The PRTG log shows the following message:
03.02.2016 13:09:33 Match: C:\Program Files (x86)\PRTG Network Monitor\download\PRTG Network Monitor 16.1.23.1696 Setup Commercial (Stable).exe
03.02.2016 13:09:33 Could not read Version info, try again... (C:\Program Files (x86)\PRTG Network Monitor\download\PRTGServerUpdate_tmp.exe)
03.02.2016 13:09:33 Could not read Version info for 5min (C:\Program Files (x86)\PRTG Network Monitor\download\PRTGServerUpdate_tmp.exe)
The Digital Signatures property of the PRTG installer in the download folder shows the following message:
The integrity of this certificate cannot be guaranteed. The certificate may be corrupted or may have been altered.
Why can’t I install the update? Is it because there is no more support for Windows Server 2003?

Updating PRTG on Windows Server 2003: Certificate Issue
With PRTG version 16.1.21.1691/1692 we renewed the certificates with which every PRTG program, including the installer, is signed (changed to SHA-2 certificates). We strongly recommend that you update to this version to be able to seamlessly update to future versions of PRTG.
If you run PRTG on Windows Server 2003, the PRTG auto-update may fail. In this case check the Certificate of the PRTG installer in the \download subfolder of your PRTG installation:
- Right-click the installer.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the tab Digital Signatures.
- Check the Digital Signature Information.
If you see the error message that the integrity of this certificate cannot be guaranteed, your Windows 2003 version is too old and does not support SHA-2 certificates out of the box.
To be able to run the PRTG update on Windows Server 2003, you need to update to a Windows 2003 version with enabled SHA-2 certificate support. Please see the following articles for more information:
Note: Running PRTG on Windows Server 2003 is not officially supported! Please see the list of Supported Operating Systems.
